JK-8 French Immersion Public School We received 72 name suggestions. Short-listed Names:
A4. Yes, all students currently attending SJD and Bawating will have the opportunity to register at the new school and will be transported according to board procedures.
A5. Yes, Algoma District School Board gives students the opportunity to register in the high school that best provides the academic program they are pursuing. Transportation is the responsibility of the parent or guardian should the student be outside the zoned area. Transportation is possible for out of boundary students to access should room be available on existing routes.
Q6. What happens to the “old” schools as the new schools are being built? Will they remain open?
A6. Both schools will remain in operation while the new school is being built. Once the schools are built, the old Bawating High School will be demolished. The future use of the Sir James Dunn building will be considered during the review of the capital plan once the building is vacated.
A7. The construction company will prepare a safety plan for the board that will completely isolate the construction site from the school operations. More detail will be available to the public once the construction tender has been awarded.

Q9. Is the school barrier free for students, staff and community members?
A9. A. Yes, the school has accessible washrooms on both floors, an elevator, a specialized area for our community developmental education program, wide corridors throughout the building, accessible programming areas in our specialized classrooms, and other features.
Q10. Will there be an elevator in the school?
A10. Yes, there will be a full size elevator in the centre of the school that will accommodate wheelchairs. The stage area will also be accessible through this elevator.
A11. The school will be air conditioned eliminating the need for opening doors and windows. Air circulation and ventilation will be a priority in the new school. Triple glass windows and good seals will also eliminate the noise pollution. As well, trees that already exist naturally absorb noise. The planting of new trees will also be considered.
Q12. Will there be adequate shops in this new school?
A12. Currently, the building has been designed to accommodate four traditional shops: Manufacturing/ Welding, Transportation, Construction and Gr. 7-9 Broad based Tech. We have also incorporated two new technologies. Students will have access to an industrial kitchen in the cafeteria which will be used for the hospitality program. As well, there will be a cosmetology classroom. The school design will also allow for additional shops to be added in the future should the need be there.
A13. The gymnasium can accommodate the whole school for graduations, assemblies and community events. There are several other places to hold assemblies: the drama classroom, the cafetorium and the media centre.

A14. The anticipated opening date is September 2011.
Q15. What kind of computer technology will we have in the new school?
A15. The facility will be connected with fibre optics, wireless, LCD projectors and laptops for enhancing instruction. Computers will be located in the library, 3 computer labs, a communication technology lab, computer engineering space, and a multi-media classroom. As well, there will be laptop carts available for classes to use. This school will have the ability to telecast, broadcast, webcast and will be equipped with video –teleconferencing equipment. As well, students will have e’learning opportunities.
Q16. Will French Immersion be available at the new school?
A16. Yes, French Immersion and Spanish will be offered in the new school. The possibility of offering additional international languages isl also being explored.
Q17. What will the academic program look like?
A17. Students attending this new facility will be offered the same academic rigor currently offered in both schools.
In addition, students will have increased opportunity to access new programming. The academic program will prepare students for success in any of the four pathways following completion of secondary school:
• World of work
• Apprenticeship
• University
• College
While the school will offer a complete compliment of academic courses, the focus of the school will be: Health Wellness and Sports Specialty; Traditional and Modern Technologies; and French Immersion and International Languages. One of the unique and positive features of this school is in the diversity of the populations it will serve. These include a 7/8 program, a regular 9-12 program, a late school and a community developmental education program.
